Rehearsal Journal
Tuesday, August 21, 2018 – Auditions and Callbacks
During the callbacks, an actor reading for Will delivered the line “That’s exactly why I’m concerned” referring to the fear Alex could be an ax murderer. That lead me to research if serial killers are well read and/or which books are their favorite. Here’s what I found:
1. The Collector by John Fowles
2. The Fashionable Adventures of Joshua Craig by David Graham Phillips
3. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
4. Rage by Stephen King
The Book Club members voting on if Alex can be part of the group lead me to think about how democracy intersects with immigration. They also voted on Lily without her knowing. Should a group get to decide on who gets to join their group. If so, why? Research led me to this interesting article about expanding citizenship.
Why did Karen Zacarias choose the documentarian to be non-American. I believe this is because non-Americans have a drastically different view of Americans than Americans have of themselves. In my research I discovered this.
**Edward is Cullen afraid he will hurt or kill Bella Swan if they have sex. How often are sex-related injuries? 40% of men will experience an injury during sex compared to 34% of women. The most common of which is hitting your head on an object.
Wednesday, August 22, 2018 – First Day of Rehearsal, Read Through
Jen and Lily make VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF hissing sounds.
This is what Sam Walton sounds like. Skip ahead to the 7:11 mark.
These are the most popular novels read by prisoners:
1. A Life Inside: A Prisoner’s Notebook by Erwin James
2. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
3. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
4. The Faithless by Martina Cole
5. Merry Christmas, Alex Cross by James Paterson
Thursday, August 23, 2018 - Day Two
Director, James Ijames asked about interview-based documentaries. My research lead me to some of the most popular ones:
1. Collapse
2. Salaam Cinema
3. Close Up
4. Last Chance U
One of the more interesting things I've discovered is the vast majority of interview-based documentaries are non-American. Perhaps Americans are more about controlling the narrative and the rest of the world are more into letting people tell their own stories. This may explain Ana's need to be controlling.
**Out of curiosity, I researched the meaning of the names:
Ana - "Gracious"
Robert Novum - "Bright, shining" "New"
Will - "Desire"
Lily - "Pure"
Jennifer - "Fair"
Alex - "Protector of mankind"

The proper pronunciation of Martin Scorsese.
Martin Scorsese has adapted eight books into movies, including Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence." The other books are:
"Gangs of New York" by Herbert Asbury
"Casino" by Nicholas Pileggi
"The Aviator" based on "Howard Hughes: The Secret Life" by Charles Higham
"Raging Bull" based on "Raging Bull: My Story by Jake Lamotta
"Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane
"The Wolf of Wall Street" by Jordan Belfort
"Silence" by Shusaku Endo
Lily graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kenyon College, which is a really big deal as it is a private college currently ranked 26th out of about 200 liberal arts schools. The school has produced three Pulitzer Prize winners.

Jen was involved in an affair when she was an intern. The current average age of senate interns is is 26. That is slight up from years past when the average intern was under 25. The average age of a senator is 61 and has steadily been rising since the late '80s. (For more information click here.) Monica Lewinsky was 22 when she served as Bill Clinton's intern. He was 49.
"Book Club, I presume" (Alex).
After a brief discussion of what Jen's ringtone should be, this song was chosen:
(As not to spoil anything, the link to the song will be included after the opening of the show.)

Frank's speech about Hemingway took me to THIS interesting article.
